Pupil Premium

The Pupil Premium is allocated to children from low-income families who are currently known to be eligible for free school meals (FSM) in both mainstream and non-mainstream settings and children who have been looked after continuously for more than six months.

The Government believes that the Pupil Premium, which is additional to main school funding, is the best way to address the current underlying inequalities between children eligible for free school meals (FSM) and their wealthier peers by ensuring that funding to tackle disadvantage reaches the pupils who need it most.

In most cases the Pupil Premium is allocated to schools and is clearly identifiable. It is for schools to decide how the Pupil Premium, allocated to schools per FSM pupil, is spent, since they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for the individual pupils within their responsibility.

Sports Premium

Once again this year, the school will be receiving the Sports Premium Funding from the Government.

In April 2013, the Government announced new funding of £150 million for physical education (PE) and school sport. This funding should be used to improve the quality and breadth of PE and sport provision.

The funding is allocated directly to primary schools across England, providing them with a dedicated resource to buy in invaluable expertise and support to improve participation and promote healthy active lifestyles.

Schools have flexibility on how they use the funding but it should be used to increase and improve the PE and sport offered to pupil, including increasing participation in PE and sport so that all pupils develop healthy lifestyles and reach the performance levels they are capable of.

At St Michael’s Primary School we have employed a specialist sports coach to teach some of the PE lessons to all classes from Reception to Year 6 across the year.  The funding also allows us to offer extra-curricular sports clubs for both KS1 and KS2, run by professional coaches, at no cost to parents.
