Reception Curriculum

In Reception, our curriculum builds on children’s experiences from Nursery and prepares them for a successful transition into Year 1. We provide a broad, ambitious and carefully sequenced curriculum that supports children to develop strong foundations in communication and language, personal, social and emotional development, physical development, early reading, writing and mathematics.

Children learn through a balance of high-quality adult-led teaching, purposeful play, continuous provision and carefully planned enhancements. Key knowledge, vocabulary and skills are taught, revisited and applied throughout the year so that children can remember more, do more and grow in confidence.

Our half-termly themes, stories, songs, visits and first-hand experiences provide meaningful contexts for learning. These include learning about ourselves and our families, celebrations, heroes, our local area, growing and the seaside.

We use responsive teaching and ongoing assessment to understand what children know and can do. Adults adapt teaching, provision and support so that all children, including those with SEND, disadvantaged children and children with English as an additional language, can access the curriculum and make progress from their starting points.
